Genetic Makeup:Dominant for pigmentation (M/m) and dominant for iridophores (I/i).
Care Requirements
Regardless of their genetic coloration, the Wild Type axolotl requires the same strict environmental parameters as any Ambystoma mexicanum. They are fully aquatic amphibians that never undergo metamorphosis.
- Temperature: Strictly 60°F to 68°F (15°C to 20°C). Temperatures above 70°F cause severe stress and fungal infections.
- Water Quality: 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, and Nitrates below 20ppm. A fully cycled tank is non-negotiable.
- Diet: Carnivorous. Earthworms and dendrobaena worms are the staple diet for adults.
- Substrate: Bare bottom for juveniles under 5 inches. Fine sand for adults. Never use gravel, as it causes fatal impaction.
